As a manufacturer of Android hardware you know you’ve made it really if Google asks you to make a Nexus device. The people at Huawei will also be only too happy to have been when they put the doodle under contract the Nexus 6P. The Chinese manufacturer is working hard in recent years on the road, but most managed to amass fame in the value segment. With the Nexus 6P showed the company that they have the knowledge and skill to fabricate a high-end device.

Huawei Mate 8

For 2016 Huawei maintains she CES firm upward trend and threw high eyes again, this time with the 6 “Mate 8, which was released late last year in China and beginning in 2016 to the Netherlands. Where Huawei for the hardware of the Nexus 6P yet Qualcomm joined forces, the Mate 8 contains a chip developed by subsidiary Hisilicon, the Kirin 950. Now, it is not new that Huawei uses its own socs, but so far the chips could not keep up with the major parties as Qualcomm.

With 950 sets Huawei, however, a big step forward. Indeed, it is the first chip that is based on the new Cortex A72-processor design and it is the second chip – after Apples A9 – which is manufactured at TSMC on the new 16nm FinFET process. Combine that with a nice metal case, a fingerprint scanner and a brand new camera sensor from Sony and you have a device that – on paper at least – so the competition seems to be the high-end models from the competition. That’s why we went during CES along with the state of Huawei to feel this Mate 8 nearer to the tooth.
Familiar face

Mate 8 looks from the outside much like the twisted Mate 7, which is not mind. Huawei again used a high-quality aluminum housing which, in terms of build quality and finish, could not fault it is. For a phone with a screen diagonal of 6 “Mate 8 is very compact, thanks to the small edges around the screen creates an effect that makes the front of the phone almost entirely off screen appears to exist.

On the back is a fingerprint scanner, as we saw at the Mate 7 and Huawei’s own Nexus 6P. It is a nice place for such a scanner, because you already put your finger on it while you can fish the phone out of your pocket. The only flaw is that he is not usable when the phone flat on a table. The scanner used in the eighth Mate works as far as we could see rap as fast and accurate.

A 6 “phone is still a great thing to hold, and you should really keep it, but if you do take such a big phone, it is fine that the manufacturer has put effort to the ‘damage’ keep limited. The Extent 8 is about the same size as an iPhone 6 Plus, while the phone only has a 5.5 “screen. The screen used Huawei is an excellent laminated full HD IPS panel. This format is a qHD display may still be worthwhile due to the higher pixel density, but on the other hand, the relatively low resolution ensures that the eight Mate probably very long life on one battery charge.

Big steps

Subsequent procedures should help, in addition to the large 4000mAh battery, the aforementioned Kirin 950-soc. Firstly because, instead of A57- Cortex, used the more economical Cortex A72 cores and secondly because it is baked on TSMC’s 16nm FinFET process. So that should provide better battery life, but because the Cortex-A72 also considerably quicker than the Cortex-A15 cores from the Mate 7, go at once to the performance up. Given the volatile performance of the seven Mate is certainly welcome.

We got it because of the brackish wifi on the stand, did not manage to run benchmarks, but the phone did certainly very easy to. Multitasking should not be a problem because the standard model is equipped with 3GB memory and power users, there is even a model with 4GB of ram. As today we can expect from a Chinese phone has Mate eighth place for two SIM cards, one place can also be used for stabbing a micro SD card.

Another point on which the Mate 7 could still be improved was the camera. The Mate 8 is equipped with a brand new 16-megapixel sensor from Sony, the IMX298. This sensor has support for phase detection autofocus and would thus be able to focus a lot faster than the Mate 7. There is also now available optical image stabilization, something that we see for a long time at high-end phones.

It is almost impossible to properly evaluate image quality of pictures by creating snapshots in an exhibition hall, so we have not ventured. However noticed that the camera focuses rap and that there is a whole lot to set the Professional mode, such as iso-value, shutter speed, focus mode and white balance. The iso-value goes up to 1600 ISO, which is not bad for a phone, though it’s still the question of what that does to the image quality.
Software

Traditionally, Huawei has the Android operating system significantly overhauled. Mate 8 runs Android 6.0, but in the form of Emui 4.0, which is a further development of the version we’ve seen on previous Huawei phones. With this kind of skins that Android drastically upset the very personal whether you do or do not like. We find it unfortunate that Huawei still shows little originality and borrows much from manufacturers like Apple and Xiaomi. However, it must also be said that the manufacturer adds many useful features and user example provides lots of control over settings and apps.

Finally

The Mate 8 is clearly an evolution of the Mate 7 and Huawei seems to have set itself the goal to address the negative aspects of the previous unit. Our first impression is that they are there largely successful. The phone retains the fine housing and adds a better camera and much faster and more efficient hardware increasing. That the manufacturer has managed to make such a big jump with his Kirin-soc is impressive.

With the Nexus 6P Huawei has already proved that they can make high-end hardware. These Mate 8 underlines and confirms once again that the company as a chip manufacturer must be taken seriously. Where it could sit at the nexus 6P for the software on Google, it is for this phone to rely on its own software expertise. This is therefore the level where they are in our eyes can still get hold of the most profitable, especially in the field of design.

Huawei has major ambitions and has already expressed several times that it wants to become one of the largest players in the smartphone market, also in the west. With prove Mate 8 them that they are on track and that the current leaders are good to look over their shoulder.
