IBM will learn to program the chips, operating on the principle of the brain

The company IBM Research has developed software for experimental crystals that mimic the human brain. California researchers describe their development of a “revolutionary software ecosystem.”

The technology allows you to program chips whose architecture is borrowed from nature. Integrated circuits operating at reduced capacity, capable of processing sensory information, act, and learn about the world, just as it does the human brain.

The new software is fundamentally different from traditional software. IBM has said that it created a programming model breaks the traditional model of a sequence of operations, which has its roots in the 1940s to John von Neumann architecture. Per cycle model IBM performs not one, but a lot of teams at the same time. The new model is designed for distributed, highly interconnected, asynchronous, parallel, and large-scale cognitive computing.

Architecture and software are closely related, so the new architecture requires a new programming paradigm. We are working on the creation of Fortran programming language for cognitive computer chips. In addition to the current computer this will provide fundamentally new technological possibilities in the light of the programming and implementation of developing cognitive systems – the main researcher and senior manager at IBM Research Dharmendra EHPM.

Its new chips, operating on the principle of the human brain, IBM announced back in 2011. However, to use these chips require the creation of special programming tools.

According to IBM, «brain-like ‘computers may differ extremely high performance and low power consumption. The project is financed by the Office of Advanced Studies in Defense (DARPA). The agency has already invested in the development of more than 53 million dollars.

IBM researchers have taken important steps towards creating computers, which operate on the principle of the brain. They have been developed simulator of multi-threaded, massively-parallel and highly scalable software using a massive network of neyrosinapticheskih cores, also known as processors Synapse.

IBM has set a long-term goal of creating a computer system the size of a two-liter jar with ten billion neurons and hundred trillion synapses within the virtual, which would consume no more than 1 kW of power.

The programming model follows the principle of the neural model. It is composed of a suitable reusable building blocks, the so-called “korletov» («Corelet»). Each Corelet is a network of neurons. The internal operations of the neuron hidden from the programmer, who sees only the external inputs and outputs. Thus, the programmer can focus on what makes a neuron, rather than how it does it. Korlety are hierarchical structures. They can be used to create new, more complex korletov.

For more than 150 korletov become part of the library for programmers. IBM has introduced a new model of programming at the International Conference on Neural Networks (International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, ICANN), which these days is held in the U.S. city of Dallas (TX).

Previously, scientists from Dalhousie University announced the creation of the first practical high-level programming language for quantum computers .
