iCub – thinking robot

The ability to learn independently is an essential component of human intelligence. Can modern computing models to adapt to the changing external environment? To try to answer this question European scientists working on the project iCub. Supervises the work of Peter Ford Domain, a longtime problem of modeling the human brain, that is, a computer neuroscience, and received a grant to conduct the EU case studies.

Obtained in the present time, the result can seem modest, a prototype humanoid rise less than a meter, capable of solving the simplest problems. But do not jump to conclusions, chief Peter Domain achieved – his brainchild is quite able to see their surroundings with their own eyes – digital cameras, judge distances, walk on two legs and use your hands for the intended purpose, that is to lift and put in the right places subjects. He is able to hold a conversation, even if his voice is different and yet melodic, but passes portal, his tone is quite accessible. Total of six versions of the robot iCub.

The experiment took place in the French city of Lyon. So far, the entertainment robot teach that, too, is not easy. Of course, before the realization of the dream of the twentieth century science fiction, robots, superior to human intelligence, far away, and indeed the big question, whether the goal is achievable, but the main thing has been done. To perform its task, the scientists had to plumb the depths of the principles of logical thinking of the human mind, to develop algorithmic scheme response to external stimuli and technology decision-making on the interaction of the brain and peripheral electronic electro-mechanical manipulators. And had to answer a series of questions about the nature of consciousness, in particular, to define it as the ability to understand.

These days, when some consumer devices, which have found wide application already in use, seemed impossible a couple of decades ago can clean house without the owners and do other chores function, the robot-assistant does not seem something unreal. Apparently, the fate of the first humans, the prototype of which will be the iCub, it is this – to help people in their household chores and routine work. However, one should also bear in mind that the capacity of the human body is limited by external conditions, and the types of its activities, which are not possible because of the dangerous or too harsh environmental conditions, may become available in the future for a humanoid robot.

Domain itself does not expect too rapid results from their research, and to develop a working prototype led group devotes at least a decade. He gets from his work a great pleasure, and the rapid development of hardware components and software gives us hope that artificial intelligence will be created in a fairly short period of time, and thinking machines become true helpers man in all that now complicates his life.
