Find a Question:
iMessage was named the most secure service for mass communication
A nonprofit advocacy organization Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has audited several dozen services for messaging, including iMessage, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp, Viber and Facebook Messenger. According to the study, Apple services are recognized as one of the most secure solutions for mass communication in the network.
Experts have found that only a small part of messengers satisfy at least the minimum requirements of security. Many popular programs there is no system of through encryption (end-to-end) – from one end to the other, so that the contents of the messages could see only the sender and the recipient. Correspondence can be read by a third party, including the ISP. A IM-clients such as QQ, Mixit and desktop version of Yahoo Messenger does not offer any encryption at all.
Total EFF reviewed 39 products, including chat clients, applications for text messaging, email, and technology for voice and video calls. Assessing their safety, the researchers took into account factors such as encryption, independent audit of the code, the ability to gain access to the old correspondence in case of theft of keys, whether the user can be sure of the identity of the interlocutor, whether protected by correspondence history – just eight parameters.
Following checks iMessage and FaceTime proved the most reliable among the known and widely available instant messengers. They scored 5 points out of 7 possible. The same amount earned messenger Paul Durov Telegram. Other solutions lower ratings: Facebook Chat – 2 points, Google Hangouts – 2 points, Skype – 2 points, WhatsApp – 2 points, AIM – 1 point, Viber – 1 point, BlackBerry Messenger – 1 point, Secret – 1 point.
However, none of the technologies, including iMessage, is not protected from deliberate “wiretapping” and the collection of data, experts say. They also found that Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, Yahoo chat rooms for PC and mobile devices, as well as WhatsApp and Secret does not provide end encryption.
The most safe on all fronts were recognized following messengers: ChatSecure, Cryptocat, Signal / Redphone, Silent Phone and Silent Text, and TextSecure. They, however, are not very popular with the bulk of Internet users.
