In 2020, electric VW models will be just as good as Tesla’s, at half price
Herbert Diess, the director of the German car manufacturer Volkswagen, says that in 2020, his company will come with electric cars that are just as good as those of Tesla, but that they will cost half less. He said that in German television program.

Diess emphasized in the ZDF program of the German journalist Maybrit Illner that Volkswagen will acquire a very strong position in the market for electric vehicles, according to Electrek . The Volkwagen CEO reports that € 30 billion has been invested in electric mobility. He points out, among other things, that the existing factory in Zwickau, Germany, has been converted for the production of electric vehicles and that a new factory is being constructed in Shanghai.

All this should ensure that in 2020 electric cars from Volkswagen on the market that are just as good as models of Tesla, but then for half the price. He did not give any further details, such as which Volkswagen models he is referring to or which Tesla models he envisaged in the comparison. Reuters reported earlier that Diess said more than a year ago that he sees Tesla as the main competitor when it comes to the electric car market.

If the German manufacturer wants to make Diess’s claim known, it is probably about a new Volkswagen model, the ID Neo. Auto Express writes that this is a hatchback that according to Volkswagen in different versions, where the cheapest variant gets a 48kWh battery, a range of 330km and will cost roughly 30,000 euros. The middle version has to reach 400 to 450km and the most expensive variant gets an unknown range.

Because this car only gets a slightly longer wheelbase than the current Golf and is a hatchback, it does not look like a serious competitor for the current models of Tesla. The company of Elon Musk eventually comes with the new Model Y , a crossover suv. It seems more likely that the ID Neo will at least partially compete with current electric cars from other manufacturers, such as the Hyundai Kona Electric or the Kia e-Niro which cost around 40,000 euros.
