In Indonesia, found “walking” shark
A new species of sharks that are “stroll” on the ocean floor using fins, which replace their feet, was discovered on the eastern coast of Indonesia. On Friday told an environmental group.
White and brown bamboo sharks prowl at night along the bottom in search of small prey in the form of fish and shellfish inhabitants of the local waters, according to the organization Conservation International, whose researchers participated in the opening. Harmless to human shark, which grows up to nearly 80 centimeters, was spotted near the island of Halmahera, the largest of the Maluku islands, lying to the west of New Guinea.
Bamboo sharks, also known as long-tailed carpet sharks, quite small compared to their larger cousins. In the past the maximum length of an adult reaches about 120 centimeters. The tail has an unusually long, and is larger than the rest of the body. These sharks are found in tropical waters off the coast of Indonesia, Australia and Papua New Guinea.
According to Conservation International, the detected species of sharks, which was first described in ichthyological journal International Journal of Ichthyology, «should attract a diverse and unexplored region until the end of the divers.”
The researchers hope that the shark, dubbed Hemiscyllium halmahera, become a kind of hallmark of these places, as well as an excellent example of the fact that many sharks are not dangerous to humans and should be protected.
In the opening of a new species of sharks also attended by members of the Museum of Western Australia.
