Find a Question:
In the ten: NASA found a cluster of massive black holes
Powerful telescope NASA discovered not one, but ten giant black holes lurking in distant galaxies. This is the first major discovery of cosmic X-ray Observatory agency, say scientists. In the past year, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have discovered an abnormal area in a small galaxy .
The discovery, which, according to the researchers, was an accident, was made during a study of imagery collected by the X-ray Telescope Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), designed specifically to hunt for black holes.
We watched the objects known to us and noticed the background image on black holes, “- says David Alexander, professor of physics at Durham University.
What I saw confirmed the data space and the Chandra X-ray telescope XMM-Newton of the European Space Agency, who were also able to see weak radiation in the area with black holes.
The researchers believe that the finding is part of a decade hundreds of other black holes, which are yet to be discovered. Each found a supermassive black hole helps to better understand the population.
According to NASA, supermassive black holes are part of the puzzle, which astronomers first encountered in 1962, when they saw the depths of the universe in infrared light, but could not understand where it comes from. Today, scientists know that the source of this radiation (cosmic X-ray background) are a distant supermassive black holes, some of which are heavier than the Sun at 17 billion times. But these beasts are formed remains to be seen.
Our first results show that the more distant supermassive black holes lurk in larger galaxies. What is to be expected. In the early universe, galaxies to be more active – they come across merged and grew – says study co-author and scientist Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA.
If NuSTAR specializes in finding massive black holes, their analysis, for example, the definition of the mass handled by other observatories, such as space telescopes, WISE and Spitzer.
The study was published in the journal Astrophysical Journal.
Previously, it was identified that the rotation speed supermassive black hole close to the speed of light .
