Intel 660p NVD ssds with qlc nand have a price of about 21 eurocents per GB

The first consumer ssds with qlc-nand have appeared in a price comparison tool. It is the Intel 660p in versions of 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. The price is about 21 cents per gigabyte, which is much cheaper than nvme ssds with tlc-nand.

The German ComputerBase notes that the Intel 660p SSDs have been published by Geizhals . Various web shops offer SSDs, even though they are not in stock yet. The 2TB model costs 429.90 euro, the 1TB version stands for 218.90 euro and the 512GB version is from 111.90 euro. The largest versions have a price of around 21 cents per gigabyte and that is a price breakthrough for a nvme ssd. Nvme ssds in the Pricewatch currently have a price of about 33 cents per gigabyte . Sata SSDs in 2.5 “format are still cheaper, with prices starting at around 16 eurocents per GB.

Intel can offer the 660p-nvme ssds cheaper because they use qlc memory. They are the first consumer ssds with qlc nand. The manufacturer has already indicated to come up with such SSDs in the second half of this year, although the 660p series has not yet been formally introduced.

In the case of qlc nand, each memory cell consists of four bits; at tlc nand these are three bits. Due to the higher density, SSDs require fewer chips and that makes them cheaper. It also enables SSDs with higher capacities. Qlc memory is slower and has a shorter lifespan than tlc-nand. This can be accommodated with modifications in the firmware, the controller and the use of extra memory chips for overprovisioning .

Intel’s 660p NVSDs would, according to previously published information, be faster than the 600p variants with tlc-nand, despite their lower price and the use of qlc memory. The sequential read and write speeds are 1800MB / s and 1100MB / s, while random read and write actions are with 150,000iops.

Probably more manufacturers will come up with SSDs based on qlc memory, which could lead to further price reductions.
