Find a Question:
Intel introduced the “quark” – the new SoC for wearable electronics
As the portal The Verge, the company Intel has announced its smallest mobile processor. He called Quark and the size is only one-fifth the size of the existing line of chips Atom, while using only one-tenth of its energy consumption. Speaking at the event in 2013 Intel Developer Forum (IDF), Intel CEO Brian Krzhanich shared that the new chip Quark X1000 is designed for “Internet stuff”.
Realizing silent resentment press Krzhanich hastened to explain that the company is ready to provide developers with a miniature reference design circuit boards and software that they can use to build compact computer communication, keeping in mind, for example, a smart watch.
“Yes, we are working on wearable electronics” – said Krzhanich showing another printed circuit board that would fit perfectly as a basis kakih-nibud “smart” watches.
CEO immediately hastened to clarify that Intel itself has no plans for an independent production wearable electronics, but hopes that it can inspire the development and attract other companies to use its new processor.
Krzhanich important to note the fact that its new chips “fully synthesizable,” explaining that the company intends to license the chip to other manufacturers. As an example, CEO Intel led the ARM, which allows developers such as Apple, Qualcomm and Samsung to license its products to further modify it, develop personally and even build their own processors based on this architecture.
“Our strategy in this matter is very simple,” – says Krzhanich.
“The plan is to take a leading position in every segment of the computer market. It’s not just servers, laptops, tablets and phones, but also other devices that will be developed in the future. ”
And the company plans to start slowly run: Intel recently opened a “new technical department”, which was headed by Mike Bell, former boss of the company division for the issue of mobile phones.
Deliveries of the reference PCB with chips Quark will begin in the fourth quarter of this year. Basis of these products we will have to wait until early next.
[UPDATE]: The latest information suggests that Quark is actually not the processor, and the new name of its nuclei, whose size and power consumption is much lower than the processor core Atom. In other words, the core processor in Quark will only occupy one-fifth of the area and consume only one-tenth the power compared to the core processor Atom. In this performance here goes by the wayside. Quark designed to market the devices in which power consumption and size play a more important than performance. At least, so said one of the representatives of Intel.
