Intel: Mac expects a significant decrease in performance when switching to other chips
Amid rumors about Apple testing Mac models based on its own ARM-processors, Intel Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith made a rather curious statement. According to him, the rejection of Intel processors guaranteed to lead to lower performance computers Apple.
In an interview with Business Insider Intel spokesman said:
“Our advantage over competitors is strengthened. We do not lag behind the industry. In fact, we are ahead of the industry. Clients such as Apple, in case of failure of our architecture will have to sacrifice performance. This is what allows us to remain a priority for different customers. ”
Over the past few years, Apple has held a number of important measures to the most elaborate computer chips for its popular mobile electronics iPhone, iPad, iPod and Apple TV. Rumors and speculation about the possibility of moving the company to Intel processors on its own chips in the Mac sounded long ago. With the increase in computing power ARM-making they sound louder .
Apple started using Intel processors in 2005, and this transition is taken by Steve Jobs, was quite painful. And although today the company is loyal to Intel and is unlikely to change in the next few years, observers believe the transition to own chips inevitable, especially in light of the fact that the devices on iOS and OS X are gradually converging. Processors used today in the iPhone and iPad, will one day be powerful enough to act as the basis for desktop computers and laptops.
Such a change can cause considerable harm to Intel, the largest manufacturer of processors, who suffers damage because of the stagnation of the market Windows-based computers and difficulties with access to the mobile market. «Apple sets the direction of development, and if she will go on their own chips on the desktop market, it may be followed by others – believes Gartner analyst Sergis Mashell. – If mobility is more important than functionality, we have to deal with a completely different environment than today. ”
Market watcher Ming-Chi Kuo has recently introduced an analytical report to investors, which pointed out that the process of transition to OS X with Intel ARM takes a lot of time at Apple: Intel chips today is more powerful and can perform highly demanding tasks. However, the analyst believes that ARM processors in the next 2-3 years will be powerful enough to replace the Intel chips in the line of the Mac.
The transition to ARM processors in the coming years even more possible that line today “apple” computers provides a small part of the revenue Apple. If the transition to ARM chips in fact take place in a Mac, it will happen, especially in laptops like MacBook Air, where battery life, size and weight are some of the key indicators – due to the lower power consumption of ARM chips are the most attractive for such devices in the line of Mac.
