Intel has announced the fourth generation of its Xeon E5 2600 processors. The E5 2600 v4 series visiting 27 different models based on the Broadwell-EP architecture. The top model, the E5 2699 v4, has 22 cores.

Intel Xeon E5 v4 In February specifications were leaked to the Xeon E5 2600 processors v4 and now Intel’s new family of processors for servers officially presented shows that they were correct. The processors are baked at 14nm, while v3 models Haswell architecture have been made at 22nm.

The Xeon E5 processors are the midrange line of CPUs for servers and workstations, between E3 and E7 series in. Like the E5 2600 v3 processors have v4 models support for DDR4 memory. However, the maximum memory rate is now 2400MHz instead of 2133MHz. Compared to the previous generation of the new chips have more and more cores L3 cache. The TDP is in most cases unchanged. The new chips fit in the same socket as the v3 2011-3 series. With a bios update, it is therefore possible to provide existing servers and workstations, an upgrade to v4 generation.

Thanks to the production process has the 14nm-E5-2699 V4 that of the processor cores 22 with a surface area of 454mm². That is smaller than the Xeon E5 v3 model with cores 18, which has a surface area of 662mm². The new chip with cores 22 in fact has 24 cores, but there are two turned off. Each core is associated with 2.5MB L3 cache, for a total of 55MB.

Xenon E5 v4 design

As with the Haswell-EP-Xeon, Intel’s makes three configurations for which the E5 Xeon processors. In addition to the large slab which is used for the models with 16 or more cores, there is one that is of 306mm² that makes CPUs with 12 to 15 cores possible. As the largest that has this configuration, two memory controllers. The smallest of Xeons with 10 cores or less, uses a memory controller that can control up to four channels.

Anandtech notes that the chip in a review of E5 2699 v4 not always know to beat its predecessor with fewer cores. The v3 version with 18 cores has increased turbo speeds and therefore faster when the number of cores is not decisive. For virtualization purposes, the v4 with its 22 cores clearly faster.

Before the introduction of the E5 processors v4 there was a rumor that Intel would come with a quad-core version which is clocked at 5,1GHz. According to the reports concerned the E5-2602 v4 with 10MB cache and a TDP of 165W. Intel has not announced this processor, so still that rumor does not seem true.
