Internet exchange AMS-IX is facing failure – update 2

Internet exchange AMS-IX Wednesday faced with failure. Many sites, including GeenStijl, Facebook, Tweakers and were therefore not accessible or bad for a short time. The problems occurred during maintenance work.

The statistics of the AMS-IX shows that the traffic over the Internet exchange, the most important of the Netherlands and one of the largest in the world, just after 12 noon falls to zero. That does not mean that all traffic fell out of the node: the failure measurement system fell out. Meanwhile, the jam is cleared, it leaves a spokeswoman for the AMS-IX know.

According webhoster Greenhost negotiated AMS-IX down about ten percent of the normal Internet traffic. The AMS-IX can not confirm that figure. Due to the failure faced many major Web sites – including GeenStijl, Facebook, and Tweakers – with accessibility problems. The pinverkeer was disrupted Wednesday.

The AMS-IX states that the problem was caused by an error during maintenance. In an email to members of the AMS-IX, Tweakers confirmed the authenticity, the AMS-IX reports that a plant employee inadvertently created before a walk on a VLAN. That happened on the AMS-IX location in the AM3 Equinix data center. This threw overloaded systems of the node, causing many border gateway protocol sessions were discontinued. The BGP protocol is used to establish individual networks to each other.

According to the AMS-IX fault ‘up to ten minutes’ long. It rarely happens that the AMS-IX, which is spread across multiple locations, so largely is silent; to the extent that it is known that not happened in recent years.

In the statistics of Tweakers is to see that the backup location of the tech site work the main location had to take large. Both locations are connected to the AMS-IX, but both on a different route.

Update, 13:17: Response AMS-IX added.

Update, 13:39: More information added about cause.
