When switching from iOS 5 to 6 up to a third of all iPhones have already been brought up to date via the UMTS mobile network. On the day of the release of iOS 6, the network usage rose by iPhone users at a stroke by about 25 percent.

IOS 5 had been previously conducted by Internet services such as iCloud, iMessage and Siri to a 50 percent increase in total traffic compared to the previous version – this at least according to the Association of the German Internet Industry, eco.

These figures use the eco for people with a bold prediction: The transition to the new operating system iOS 7 for iPhone and iPad will bring to their capacity limits worldwide infrastructure of the mobile Internet – iOS 7 is 18 September appear in the final version.

“Even in recent years the maximum load on the Internet was not achieved by viral videos, not through Microsoft Updates and even through disaster news, but by a new generation of Apple iOS. Given the immense proliferation of iOS devices, the iPhone with the new models 5S and 5C experienced a rapid thrust again, iOS 7 could when available on 18 September bring the network capacity on the Internet for a few days to their limits, “explains Prof. Dr. Georg Rainer Hofmann, Head of Group E-commerce expertise in eco Association.

At the TU Darmstadt is now conducting research on solutions. MAKI – Multi-adaptation mechanisms for the future of the Internet is fun and has so far funded over the next four years, with 8 million euros.

“The Internet needs in the medium to long term, entirely new structures to the unrestrained growth of data traffic to be men,” says Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ralf Steinmetz, director of the research project “MAKI – Multi-adaptation mechanisms for the Future Internet” at the Technical University of Darmstadt. The Internet futurist deals in context of MAKI project with possible new infrastructure in the network. An intelligent combination of traditional client-server model and peer-to-peer approach iPhones are expected to benefit in the future from a much faster and more reliable data transmission.

My opinion: Good disguised PR stunt on the back of Apple Association of the German Internet Industry in association with the TU Darmstadt. Not so easy to publish verifiable facts and only make projections. Protipp for the experts? Blather and even less easy to understand report on how you can make the network better because – of interest to us all. And updates we may make it once in the WLAN – at least here in Germany that is worthwhile, before the choke slam. Above forecast you can of course also – with a wink – per Android see. Since it will happen in any case, many updates that make the grid lame ;)
