George Hotz, better known as the hacker Geohot, has announced to stop the development of the Commanderie One. This is a kit that allows users to create a regular car partially self-propelled. Cause of the decision is a letter from the government.

In the letter the NHTSA safety committee wrote recently to have heard of the plans of Hotz. The Committee refers in the letter to a recent blog post of comma.ai, the company that Hotz has been established to develop the technique. In it he writes that it is not the intention of the system is to create a self-propelled vehicle, but it is a combination of lane guidance and adaptive cruise control. Therefore, it would have to be its use legal, Hotz claims. The NTSA has a different opinion and calls Hotz delay the delivery of the comma One to determine whether the system is truly secure.

In addition, the committee asks whether Hotz for November 10 will answer fifteen questions about his product as part of a ‘special order’. If he does not, he faces a fine of $ 21,000 per day above the head, converted approximately 19,200 euros. For example, the questions are about the installation of the system, the functionality, the conditions of safe use and which supports the brake system.

In response to the letter late Hotz in a series of tweets know that he stops the Comma One and that his company is engaged in other products. He does not mention which products these are. He adds that he is “his life would rather spend on building great technology than dealing with regulators and lawyers. He is critical of the NHTSA because the organization approached him for the first time through the letter and did not ask to be allowed to test the system.

In April Hotz still had an investment of $ 3.1 million retrieved from the development of the system. He was going to the end of this year to bring out the Comma One for a price of $ 999 with a monthly fee of $ 24 for the software. Hotz is also known under the name Geohot to the fact that he is a jailbreak for the iPhone and at seventeen later developed PlayStation 3 exploit.
