Within a short time after the rat heart stops beating, the rats observed electrical activity of the brain. Scientists attribute this directly with consciousness. Although reliable data about that person, for example, can continue the process of thinking after death, no studies in rats may shed light on reports of clinical death. As well as open up new possibilities in the study of consciousness.

“People believe that after the heart stops, when the brain has too little oxygen or glucose, it does not function properly,” – said neuroscientist Jim Borjigin the University of Michigan, the head of the experiment. Higher brain functions may require less oxygen and energy than scientists think, said Borjigin.

Command Bordjigin implanted electrodes in the brain surface of nine rats were administered to rats after which potassium chloride, whereby their hearts stayed with the bloodstream. This definition of clinical death.

At that point, or shortly, neurological activity must cease. However, within 30 seconds, researchers observed high frequency synchronized activity known as gamma-rays. The people of gamma-rays, by the scientists to play a role in the interaction of perception, awareness and intention, that is, consciousness.

In early studies in rats Borjigin observed a sudden release of neurotransmitters at the time of death. If what was observed in rats, has human counterparts, says Borjigin, a combination of neurochemical bursts and the ongoing electrical activity can be observed at the moment of clinical death. As you know, many people said that their perception continued to operate even after the heart stopped.

“After receiving proof of a highly organized activity of the brain and neurophysiological functions in accordance with the conscious processes at the moment of clinical death, we can scientifically prove things far more real than the questionable mental experiences survived clinical death” – the researchers note.

Of course, to say that the tested nine rats is impossible. Did they see light at the end of the barn with millet, as it were, and whether there are similar neurological mechanisms in humans is still unknown.

Why did no one believes in clinical death? According Bordjigin, signals that shot EEG people at the time of clinical death, were too weak, since the readings are taken from the scalp and not directly from the brain tissue.

Bordjigin study raises questions and much more interesting than the question of clinical death: the nature of consciousness itself, and whether it requires much less oxygen and energy than previously thought.

If the rat did think after death, the experiment has to offer testing methodology consciousness. For example, researchers could give the rats a drug that blocks the activity of a particular protein, and then watch what happens to the brain after death.

In the long run, it can give an idea about the biological mechanisms of consciousness that is still difficult to explain from the point of view of neuroscience. In the end, we know so little about the brain, and are already planning to create artificial intelligence .
