iTunes Radio: And paying record companies

Apple iRadio

Since the launch of music service iTunes Radio in September this year, the record companies have rights to the music tracks available for listening through this service, began to receive cash payments. From several of these companies is available quite detailed information about the amount of payments, these figures would be interesting and instructive to learn.

Let me remind you, iTunes Radio currently officially available in U.S. only rumored to expand the geography of music service is planned for early 2014. Therefore, the number of students is now much less than what is expected, say, a year.

So, how much earn record labels? For an example, the data from one medium-sized company specializing mainly in classical music. Of course, classics like the musical direction is not as popular as, say, something from the category of “Top 50 style Pepsi”, but the order amount is quite revealing, they can be used to judge the whole picture. Or, for example, comparing our specializing in “classic” label with mediocre company engaged in the pop direction, you can get the raw data for further calculations. In general, the order of numbers is clear, have something to draw on.

Over 500,000 plays taken us record company receives 350 (!) Dollars. The data were obtained on the basis that one song played about 10 000 times for this Apple pays $ 7. One album reaches figures approximately 70,000 plays, given that it was presented in the list of one of the sections supervised in iTunes Radio .

It should be noted that funds to the accounts of the record companies, not artists, performers and composers, that is paid only listening to the copyright owner. But more money is divided between the parties concerned under the contract.

Even if we imagine that with the expansion of the geography of iTunes Radio plays increase the number of, say, 5 million per month, the amount of payments will still be negligible, especially if we exclude all payments under copyrights and royalties to performers. We can confidently say that the amounts that remain after all deductions, is hardly enough for documents on cooperation with the music service Apple.
