Japan Launches Advanced GPS Satellite

A few days ago, Japan launched an H-2A rocket carrying a geostationary GPS satellite after a week-long delay due to a technical problem with the missile. The satellite is the third new satellite to be placed in orbit, Japan to build a local GPS system to improve the accuracy of global geographic positioning, car navigation systems and smart phone maps with an error margin of up to a few centimeters.

The rocket was launched by the Japanese Space Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., and carried the third Mihibiki rocket, Part of a system consisting of four satellites, where the moon entered the planned orbit at about 2:57 pm local time.

The launch of Japan’s third satellite is part of its plan to build a local version of GPS to provide geospatial information for aeronautics and national security systems. The Japanese government plans to launch a fourth satellite by the end of the year to begin providing accurate location information Geographically by next April.

“With the success of the third satellite, we have taken another step to get signals from four satellites in the future,” Masaji Matsuyama, minister in charge of space policy, said in a statement. Japan plans to increase the number of its geostationary satellites to seven satellites by 2023, Makes its system work independently even if the US GPS system becomes unavailable for some reason.

Michebiki satellites are used to locate objects on Earth. The first satellite was launched into space seven years ago, while the second satellite was launched earlier this year, with the fourth launch in October Next year. The new satellite system will be officially used next year to complement a network of US satellites previously used by Japan for GPS.

According to informed sources, the US GPS system has a margin of error of about 10 meters when it comes to global positioning. Although Michibiki works in conjunction with GPS, the margin of error is only a few centimeters.
