As part of this experience, participants were asked to put a price tag on the data stored on their smartphones – including their family photos, friends’ photos, contact information and personal documents. Surprisingly, the monetary value of individuals versus their data was much lower than expected, compared to the level of distress and pain they would have experienced in the event of loss of data.

Moreover, experience has shown that the memories most valuable to individuals are the same ones that tend to sell for money. When the money was offered to the participants (based on the above amounts) for the deletion of their data (no data was actually deleted), family photos, friends, personal documents and the photographs themselves were among the categories of data that are often approved for deletion.
