KDE Plasma displays 5.4.0 released with alternative start program




The KDE community has released version 5.4.0 of Plasma Tuesday, including the new alternative program starts Application Dashboard. In addition, users can start with the latest Plasma-release experimental Wayland sessions.

The Application Dashboard can be set as an alternative start program in the KDE environment. The program offers a start menu in full screen, which is scalable for multiple devices. There are columns for favorites and regular programs. Furthermore, the menu can be directly searched for apps, documents and contacts.

Plasma 5.4.0 also includes 1400 new icons, which also Inkskape applications like Firefox and LibreOffice now have a ‘native’ icon using the Breeze theme. Furthermore, the developers worked on another applet for volume and expanded them the KRunner from launcher, which also now remembers previous searches.

Another big change is the preview of KDE Plasma Wayland display server. Through modifications to the kernel can on systems with free graphics drivers Wayland sessions are started. The developers warn, however, that users do not need this as a replacement for Xorg to see, and therefore it is still a test version.
