Find a Question:
KPN and Vodafone have fines for violating net neutrality
The Consumer and Market Authority has the first fines for violation of net neutrality. KPN and Vodafone have to pay respectively 250,000 and 200,000 euros, because they do not have internet traffic treated equally.
Authority for Consumer Market Vodafone was the fine of 200,000 to offering the HBO GO app where customers could watch without the data usage of the app count for their data limit. “That way, Vodafone sent her customers what they were doing on the Internet and that is not allowed,” the ACM.
According to spokesman Tim Rosendahl of the ACM, Vodafone may know that that was not allowed, because the company earlier in the fingers was tipped for an app from Vodafone Sizz daughter who did the same, but with TV programs from RTL. Vodafone said in response that the decision ‘studies’ and its possibilities ‘investigates’.
The fine of 250,000 euros KPN was imposed because the company are free hotspots, for example at stations, stunted include VoIP services. That is contrary to the network neutrality: providers may not decide what companies can and can not do, even to free hotspots. KPN recognizes the offense, “We think net neutrality extremely important,” said spokesman Maurice Piek. “We have seen this offense overlooked.” It is striking that the provider not warned before the fine was imposed.
Incidentally, KPN also offers a service where customers can use Spotify without leaving their data limit is burned. That may be, says the ACM. “They offer Spotify thereby as single service, you can also decrease if you have no internet bundle,” said spokesman Rosendahl. That is allowed, though considering the government to close this loophole.
ACM says it is the first fines are imposed by the market authority in the Netherlands for breaching the legal rules around net neutrality. The net neutrality, which came into effect two years ago, forbids providers to hinder or otherwise treating certain types of Internet traffic.Viewing:-193
