KPN starts in 2017 with mobile telephony over WiFi

KPN will allow customers from 2017 mobile calls over Wi-Fi. The carrier announced in a presentation on its own Capital Markets Day. In addition, the provider comes with its own system of Wi-Fi hotspots from customers.

Wi-Fi calling, a feature that already support some foreign providers, makes it possible to carry mobile phone calls when there is no mobile coverage. Because calls over the mobile network is towards VoIP call instead of circuit switched through 2g, it is possible to lead to the KPN network voice over the Internet from the user.

For users it works the same as just call and work, emphasizes KPN, through the normal RING button smartphones. KPN is ‘VoWiFi’ voice over internet, offering starting next year, said CEO Joost Farweck at the meeting for investors and analysts in which the provider looks ahead to the coming months. KPN did already test the technology last year. This year, KPN already comes with voice over LTE, calling over 4G. That too is a variant of VoIP. Both techniques need to phone calls with a better sound. Moreover, the compound is accomplished faster.

In addition, the service provider with its own system for Wi-Fi hotspots, something that now happens through a partnership with Fon. The aim, according to the provider less taxing on the mobile network.

On the mobile network, KPN is screwing the maximum theoretical download speed to 375Mbit / s. This is done by adding a third frequency band carrier aggregation. For this it uses the 2100MHz band, which is now in use for 3G. KPN is 10MHz of the 20MHz who use it in that band for 4G.
