MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russian pirates “loving their country” may have organized cyber attacks on countries with strained relations with Moscow on their own initiative, but said the Russian state had not participated in such piracy.

Putin, who was speaking to the international media at an economic forum in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, was asked about allegations Moscow might try to intervene in German elections scheduled for later this year.

Moscow’s position on cybercrime is heavily scrutinized after US intelligence officials alleged that Russian pirates had tried to help Donald Trump of the Republican Party win the US presidential election, which Russia categorically denied.

“If they are motivated by patriotism, they start to make their own contributions in what they think is a good battle for those who speak badly about Russia, is this possible? Theoretically possible “.

The Russian president, suspicious of pirates with enthusiastic artists acting according to their moods, said cyber attacks could appear to come from Russia, while the reality is otherwise.

Putin also said he was personally convinced that pirates could not change electoral campaigns significantly in Europe, America or anywhere else. “At the state level, we have not participated in this (piracy). We are not planning to participate in this. On the contrary, we are trying to fight it in our country,” he said.
