Leica comes next year with S3 medium format camera

with 64-megapixel sensor
Leica will release the S3 medium format camera in the spring of 2019. The device gets a 64-megapixel sensor, a large optical viewfinder, can shoot three images per second and has a 4k movie function.

Leica does not give any details about the camera. For example, the manufacturer does not say how big the sensor will be. In the Leica S2, which dates back to 2008, there is a 37.5-megapixel sensor of 30x45mm of the ccd type. Later came Leica with the S Type 007 which has a CMOS sensor with the same resolution and dimensions. It is plausible that the sensor format in the Leica S3 does not change or does not change much.

The Leica S3 is a traditional camera with a mirror and an optical viewfinder. The manufacturer promises a ‘big and clear’ viewfinder, but also gives no details of this. Whether the 4k film function uses a cut-out of the sensor, or whether it is possible to use the entire sensor surface for filming is also unclear.

Leica says that the S3 will be released in the spring of 2019. The manufacturer probably makes more details known in the run-up to the release. The arrival of the S3 was announced just before the start of the Photokina fair, where Leica also announced a collaboration with Panasonic and Sigma. These two brands will use the Leica L mount on full-frame cameras that they make themselves.

Furthermore, Leica has announced a Photos application for Android and iOS. A beta version can be downloaded immediately. The app is intended for use in combination with a Leica camera that is equipped with Wi-Fi. Through the app, photographers can share their photos and control the cameras remotely.
