LinkedIn announced Wednesday that it plans to launch a new section on its social network devoted to business news, in an effort to attract users’ attention to the service by encouraging them to read and talk about current events.

The latest updates on LinkedIn and its mobile applications are the latest attempt by LinkedIn, which Microsoft acquired last year for $ 26 billion, to expand beyond its roots as a job-hunting service and add social media benefits.

LinkedIn is called “Trending Storylines” and will include a series of links to external news sources mixed with relevant publications written by network users.

The editor of LinkedIn, Daniel Roth, said in an interview that a team of editors would choose which stories stand out. The company will not have any private correspondents. “We think people will open their days with this, getting the news they need,” he said.

Other social networking sites, such as Twitter, Facebook and Snape Chat, have been linked for years by adding features that show users the most up-to-date topics and news.

Tomer Cohen, vice president of LinkedIn Products, said that, unlike others, the network’s exposure would be limited to business and business topics in an effort to provide information that could be useful in business meetings.

LinkedIn has more than 106 million active users per month and 467 million registered users.
