Lookout Security: 6.5% of the apps in the Play Store contain aggressive adware

Caschy has ever detail about reported aggressive adware under Android , now there are new numbers from security experts Lookout. Adware is classified as such only if it collects data without the user’s consent, displays advertisements outside apps or performing unexpected actions when clicking on advertising. The business that seems to be paying off, because according to Lookout 6.5% of all apps in the Play Store are infested with adware.

This corresponds to a number of at least 58,500 900,000 available apps. Next corresponds the probability that adware is present on the device of a new user Lookout 1.6%. What may sound low, can affect many millions of users. To arrive at these figures, Lookout has analyzed over 200,000 apps. They should therefore be quite representative.

Ad-supported apps are in itself nothing bad. Bad it is, if the ad networks collect identifiable information or just affect the user otherwise undesirable. The business of mobile advertising is booming, at the same time probably the black sheep of the industry. Why such apps can ever get into the Play Store, however, is questionable. You would indeed have various permissions must be explicitly approved by the user. In this respect, the term adware would be no more justified.
