Lyft-CEO John Zimmer expects its service within five years largely has gone on to self-propelled cars. The Uber competitor assumes that the transition does not go through this kind of vehicle owners who rent their cars to others.

lyft Zimmer says that he is taking a different position than Elon Musk, who expects the rental model will catch on . Lyft however, sees the future in a model based on a fleet of self-propelled vehicles, which users can create based on different subscription usage. Traditional ownership of a car would thus also disappear completely within a period of about ten years, expect Zimmer. The rental model exhibits in his defects, because owners prefer not rent their cars to strangers and because the service can not be offered on a large scale.

The Lyft-founder says that will not happen all at once the transition to fully autonomous vehicles. He therefore distinguishes three phases, in which we are in the first at the moment. The second phase consists of limited autonomous cars that perform certain functions in addition to man-controlled vehicles. Therein autonomous vehicles are only allowed to drive under severe restrictions. For example, when a certain type of weather and at low speeds. The Lyft vehicles would know these limitations, but over time more and more rides can take on. The third phase consists of the introduction of fully autonomous cars in about ten years.

Moreover Zimmer expects the introduction of self-driving cars will provide initially for drivers, instead of a decreasing number. That could be because many people will give up their cars, creating more demand arises for drivers. That question would initially only partly be met by autonomous vehicles.

Lyft received an investment of $ 500 million of General Motors in January to create a network of autonomous vehicles. Uber competitor showed in May a first picture of a self-propelled car in the city of Pittsburgh. Shortly thereafter were users actually buy the cars.
