Mac Mini with eGPU. For what tasks?

The new generation Mac Mini was introduced in late October. The Apple compact computer was greeted by the public quite well – after all, there are practically no weak points in it, except for the weak integrated graphics from Intel. But this disadvantage can be leveled by purchasing an external graphics accelerator (eGPU). What is the novelty in tandem with a powerful video card capable of? The same question asked the journalist 9to5Mac, Jeff Benjamin. They conducted several tests. The results were entertaining.

For testing, he used his own Mac Mini in the following configuration: 6-core Intel Core i7 processor, 32 GB of RAM, and 1 TB solid-state drive. As an external discrete graphics, the journalist used a solution from the Razer Core X with AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 on board.

The full potential of graphics accelerators is revealed in specialized tests like Unigine Valley and Heaven. To have some idea of the capabilities of other Mac computers, he also connected the eGPU to the MacBook Pro 13 (2018) and the MacBook Pro 15 (2018).

As can be seen from the graph, the result of the Mac Mini exceeded all expectations – the average number of frames in both tests was in the region of 115-116. Apple laptops with a similar graphics accelerator yielded quite seriously.

The journalist did not dwell on this, and decided to test the compact Apple computer in gaming updates. For these purposes, he even installed Windows 10 via BootCamp. It was decided to check the performance using games such as the Rocket League, Madden 2019 and Forza Horizon 4.

Surprisingly, the Mac Mini even coped with a very high resolution (5120 × 2160) and high graphics settings. According to the browser, all games went smoothly and without any complaints.

The verdict turned out to be the following: a compact computer receives a serious increase in the graphic component when eGPU is connected. So powerful that the Mac Mini can be used as a gaming computer or as a station for complex calculations.
