Mantis – hexapod robot based on the turbo diesel engine

Group of crazy scientific minds of Micromagic Systems under Matt Denton for the last four years working on a four-legged robot «Mantis» («The Mantis”), rather like a spider and designed to transport people. The sample is rightly dubbed the “biggest vseprohodnogo hexapod robot in the world.”

Weight of the robot is already 1900 kg, has grown – 2.8 meters, it works on the 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine Perkins and punctuated by various sensors (including load cells, sensors, steering angle and tilt, and inclinometer), which help him to walk. To coordinate the movement of the robot uses HexEngine, based on the Linux PC, which tracks the movement of 18 hydraulic actuators installed in the legs. Additional computer panel in the cab allows the robot to operate.

“This is definitely the largest hexapod we’ve ever built,”

– Says the company’s founder and chief engineer Micromagic «Mantis» Matt Denton.

His company has been producing animatronics for film and television industry before. For example, his robots are used in virtually all parts of the filming of “Harry Potter.” But «Mantis», it is rather a passion project for its inventor, which he eventually become a reality.

Projects like «Mantis» is not the first of its kind. At the same exhibition CES 2013 showed a large spider , although the size was smaller than the creation of Denton.
