Meet the man-cyborg Andrew Johnson

Cyber AJ

Andrew Johnson of New Zealand was 35 when in 2009 the doctors diagnosed him with Parkinson’s disease – a disease affecting the nervous and motor system. At the moment of the disease there is no cure, but there are methods (mainly surgical), which can significantly improve and make life easier for sufferers of this disease. In November 2012 and February 2013th Andrew took some pretty incredible surgeries that result gave him a second chance at a normal life, though, and turned it into a true cyborg .

The fact that Johnson have thrust deep brain electrodes. They are displayed on the chest and Andrew joined with the control unit, the size of a stopwatch. In this case, you can not see anything of this: externally, Andrew does not change. All electronics are installed inside the body.

Thanks to the compact power management Andrew can send electrical signals to the brain, stimulating his work. Because of this a person can live a quiet life almost, except for the need for a daily intake of medicines.

We offer watch a video in which Andrew showcases the work of these electrodes. When the system is turned on, the person does not experience any discomfort. But should disable the electrodes and the person begins tremor, which is amplified by the minute, and his speech becomes less intelligible. With this system, Andrew can do everyday chores, which he was before the onset of the disease.

The practice of implanting electrodes into the brain in Parkinson’s disease is not new. However, despite the fact that it is perhaps almost the only tool that allows a person to live a normal life even with this illness, this method does not always work. So Andrew, to some extent, even luck.
