Microsoft has been working on a dark theme for Outlook.com for several months and will introduce it in the short term. The company already showed a test display last year during Halloween, but it required quite a bit of work.

The company reports this in a message on the Outlook feedback page, where a request for a dark mode for Outlook has received more than a thousand votes. Microsoft had already wanted to release the dark version before, but postponed it to optimize it, can be seen from the message from the Outlook team.

Last year, the web version of Outlook already briefly had a dark display during Halloween. Microsoft now calls this a sneak peak and reports that this view still required a lot of changes to make it ready for wide availability: “We have changed the colors and the code several times.”

More and more software and services are given a dark display mode. Windows 10 has this since the Anniversary Update and macOS gets a dark mode with the upcoming Mojave update. YouTube also has a Dark Mode that can be switched on.
