Microsoft shows controller for smartphones

and tablets that it worked on
Microsoft developed a controller for mobile devices in the past and now shows the prototype. The company believes that mobile games can benefit from a physical operating system instead of a touchscreen.

A document published by Microsoft states that the manufacturer thought about the design for the controller from 2012 to 2014. The manufacturer has had a prototype made. This was first made of foam rubber. Then a 3d print was made based on renders. The development and production of the mobile controller has been stalled since 2014.

The controller consists of two halves. Both parts support bluetooth low energy and have their own battery. The charging station of the controller has two grooves where the parts can be closed. The controller fits on a smartphone or tablet in the same way. The triggers are automatically calibrated when the parts are connected to a mobile device.

Microsoft recently showed a smartphone with controller with the announcement of Project xCloud, a game stream service for Xbox One games. The service was announced on 8 October and the public test phase will start next year. It is not known whether Microsoft worked on the prototype of the controller as part of plans for its own game stream service.
