Introduction

Microsoft announced the end of September the successor of the first batch of Surface tablets, the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2. When the first Microsoft Surface tablets released in 2012, expectations were high. The Surface was the first tablet with Microsoft both the hardware and the software supplied.

“The Pro 2 is the same foot, but houses subtle changes”

It is now known that the success of the first generation Surface RT tablets disappointing, leading to low prices and high depreciation at Microsoft. Whether this is also true for the Surface Pro, is not certain; Microsoft lowered prices in August 2013 with 100, but gave as a reason that the Surface Pro just sold well.

How the sales also are down, the Surface Pro was a pretty developed tablet, which ultrabook hardware that housed all software, Windows apps to Adobe Photoshop, could run smoothly. The Surface Pro 2 is the same foot, but houses some subtle changes, such as a Haswell processor and improved kickstand, and also there is a new docking station available. We went to work with the Surface Pro 2, a docking station and a Touch Cover keyboard to see if these tweaked Surface Pro is even better than its predecessor. Design: unchanged with new accessories

When we were given the Surface Pro 2 from Microsoft, we saw initially no external difference with the first generation Surface Pro. On closer inspection it turns out ‘Surface’ on the kickstand to stand in place of the Windows 8 flag and thus we’ve had the outward distinction. Unlike the Surface 2, which has become the silver Surface Pro 2 is still only available in black. Black color that could be related to the intended audience of the Surface Pro, mostly business users.
Appearance and connections

Microsoft Surface Pro 2

The right side of the Surface Pro 2 houses the power port, which also serves as a magnetic holder for the stylus. Below is the mini display port connector for external displays. At the top stands the micro sd slot, where an inserted micro sd card almost completely disappears and therefore does not touch the stylus when it is clicked on the tablet. Microsoft Surface Pro 2

At the top of the Surface Pro 2 are the power switch and the microphone. On the left side of the tablet we find the 3.5mm headphone jack and volume control. The USB port supports USB 3.0 below and finally the kickstand changed. Which now has two positions. The Surface 2, which we tested earlier, the second position did all right. At an angle of 55 degrees that stand provides a straight angle as the tablet on a desk. The first Surface Pro had only one position and that meant that the tablet was too upright to make long-term good to work with.

“The tablet can be used as a laptop but needs a solid surface”

On the outside, the Surface Pro 2 so not undergo dramatic changes. The subtle change to the kickstand makes the Surface Pro 2 or a lot more pleasant to use than the Surface Pro.
Stylus and accessories

Like the first Surface Pro also gets the Surface Pro 2 with a stylus, which are three buttons. The stylus works only in the Pro version of the Surface tablets, the Pro is doted with a digitiser, which thus can handle. That comes from Wacom digitiser and detects include how hard the stylus is pressed, so you can pull in software and Fresh Paint. Thicker lines The back of the stylus works in Fresh Paint as ‘gum’, but for example, Photoshop CS6 not. Detects that Is on the side of the pen the ‘Right’, which contextual menus can be opened. Microsoft Surface Pro 2

The stylus is standard equipment of the Surface Pro 2. That does not apply to the keyboard and that is quite a loss. The hardware in the tablet of ultrabook level, but also ultrabook productivity out of the tablet are a keyboard and mouse is essential. Through USB and Bluetooth can be the single tablet input devices provided, but Microsoft is also possible the Touch and Type Cover 2 Cover 2 supply. We have already tested the Touch Cover 2 in conjunction with the Surface 2, while we came to the conclusion that the backlight is an improvement, but the multitouch capabilities habituation and require precision. Moreover, the keyboard that gives no feedback, not suitable for prolonged typing. The Type Cover 2, with ‘real’ keys, we still can not test, but which will therefore be more appropriate. The Surface tablet is to use as laptop but also need a solid surface, because the kickstand and keyboard do not work well if you go with the Surface’s lap.
Docking station

The Touch Cover and Type Cover We already knew from the first generation Surface. When we thought it was a disadvantage that the Surface Pro did have the hardware to do as laptop or desktop replacement, but only one USB port and a display port connector service. Microsoft has apparently listened to us and made the picture complete with a docking station. The Surface tablet can be put between the ‘arms’ of the docking station, which then firmly push the tablet around. The dock has three USB 2.0 ports, a USB 3.0 port and an Ethernet connection. In addition, there is a audio input and output, and a mini display port connector on the dock. The price of the dock is high; 200 euros will cost accessory when it comes to market in January 2014.

Next page (Performance: Cinebench – 3/9) Performance: Cinebench

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 comes with a Core i5-4200U and 4GB DDR3 memory. The processor has become a familiar face to be, because it is by far the most popular Haswell chip for ultrabooks. Thus we expect that the performance will be that of an ultrabook as the Sony Vaio Duo 13, unless the processor must clocks back by a lack of cooling equal.

The single-core test gives the same picture as the multicore test, similar to the Vaio and slightly faster than the old Surface Pro. Microsoft has cooling the Surface Pro 2 so well organized. The tablet will be warmer during the tests, but not uncomfortably hot and active cooling remains quietly doing its job.

In Handbrake is the Surface Pro 2 on the second equals the Vaio Duo 13 and nine seconds faster than the Surface Pro. In Multipar the Surface Pro 2 as in HandBrake as fast as the Vaio Duo 13 with the same processor, but remarkably enough the old Surface Pro faster. Again, however, again, the difference between the old and the new Surface is not large. Screen: fine with some color errors

The Surface Pro 2 is just like the original Surface and Surface Pro 2 comes with a 10.6 “IPS panel with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. Presenting the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, Microsoft announced that all Surface would be. About that calibration screens calibrated we were at the Surface 2, Windows 8.1 RT so, still not satisfied. When testing the color reproduction on the tablet, we concluded that the average color error dE2000 with a value of 6.36 was worse than, say, other calibrated screens. Fourth-generation iPad and Google’s Nexus 7 have a deviation of 2.2 and 2.4., we looked at whether Microsoft has calibrated. panel our Surface Pro 2 more
Screen Brightness and Contrast

In conducting screen tests we encounter a small problem: we test the Surface Pro 2 as a tablet or laptop? Makes the x86 hardware Surface Pro 2 a laptop, but the form factor is that of a, somewhat cumbersome, tablet. For tests with Photoshop and Cinebench is clear that the Surface to be tested if the laptop screen tests is a different story. Because the tablet appearance Tablets generally have a higher screen brightness, so they can be too. Outdoors pretty well used Hence we make the comparison with both laptops and tablets.

The contrast ratio is measured on laptops recently at maximum screen brightness, as we always did previously at 180 nits. The high average color error is caused by the blue color, which is quite different and so it takes up quite average. In comparison, the calibrated screens of Apple and Google have an average color error of around 2.3 points. The color temperature, finally, with 6813 kelvin on the cold side, but that will be with the naked eye are quickly visible.

Generally, we are so pleased with the screen of the Surface Pro 2. Although the color error is worse than promised, but that will only play a role in the use of graphics programs. The relatively high brightness and good contrast make the screen pleasant to work with. Battery life and heat generation

When Microsoft released the Surface Pro 2, the company promised to increase the battery life of up to sixty percent. That’s a lot, but the Haswell hardware has already shown extremely economical to omspringen. Energy in earlier reviews The total battery capacity, was not changed and there was no use of ultra efficient Y-series processors from Intel. Initially we expected that would make such a processor with a TDP of 11.5 watts and a sdp of 6 watts, Microsoft use but it is ultimately a ‘normal’ i5-4200U with a TDP of 15 watts become. Whether that is enough to hold a full charge, the sixty percent longer out we were looking out.

That turned out to be the wifi chip, which is relatively much energy verstookte. A firmware update enabled the chip is able to work at lower energy levels, making the Pro 2 it lasted forty minutes longer on a single charge. The battery life in the film test result is a thick six hours. No increase of sixty percent so, but forty percent is still impressive and can make the difference between home and take leave of the adapter. Extra two hours

In the browse test provides the firmware update an extra hour working on a battery charge. The score of the first generation Surface Pro in the table is not representative, because that has been tested according to a previous test protocol, which was more energy burned. The Surface Pro 2, after the firmware update, coffee breaks included a whole day with it.
Heat dissipation

A more economical chip generally provides less heat development. During everyday use that also, the Surface tablet is never uncomfortably hot. We also wanted to see what temperatures we can drive under extreme conditions. 2 Pro To this end, we used Prime95 and Furmark, and then the active cooling of the tablet also audible.

On the cooling compared to the Surface Pro nothing has changed, but both the processor and the chipset is more economical than its predecessor. The thermal image is clearly visible that has two fans that blow the hot air at the top of the housing. Microsoft used again

After fifteen minutes Furmark we arrived at a maximum temperature of about 49 º C. Not so very cool, but a good score under the circumstances. Moreover, it is a great improvement compared to the first generation Surface Pro. Which was near the exhaust vents up to 62 º C. The temperature of 49 º C was incidentally measured near the exhaust vents at the top. The temperature of the rest of the enclosure is around 34 º C and the temperature is concerned, the Surface Pro 2 also good to use. On the couch, watching TV Photo gallery and specifications

Next page (Conclusion – 9/9) Conclusion

After a while the Surface Pro 2 played and worked, we can answer the question whether the Pro 2 is better than the first generation Surface. The answer is yes, but it depends on the usage scenario whether those improvements are also crucial for a new purchase.

The tweaks to the Surface Pro 2 are, as mentioned, remained subtle. The new kickstand is very practical and Haswell processor is smooth, but does a lot for the battery life. Which has improved and the tablet is therefore almost a day long to use when there are particular websites gebrowset. An additional advantage of the economical hardware is the heat, which is lower than in the previous Surface Pro.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2

The kickstand and battery life are improvements that the Pro 2 from its predecessor. Other things have remained the same. For speed, you do not make the upgrade to the Pro 2, the Haswell processor is only marginally faster than its predecessor Ivy Bridge. Also the screen is, despite promises from Microsoft about the color reproduction, out of the box not much better than its predecessor. This makes the screen otherwise not bad, brightness and contrast are just like the Surface Pro fine. The docking station adds a welcome amount of connections to the single USB port on the Surface Pro and Pro 2, but is compatible with both models, hence this is not necessarily an upgrade.

“The Surface Pro 2, tablet, ultrabook and desktop PC” to “replace” an upgrade is also a price, especially the accessories we find on the high side. The cheapest version, with a tiny 64GB SSD, costs 888 euros, 100 euros for 128GB pay more. A keyboard for this tablet-ultrabook-in housing is essential and Type Cover 2 Microsoft takes another 130 euros. The docking station, which we found very practical and that the lack of connections to the Surface tablet dissolves, costs 200 euros. Altogether a price of more than 1300 euros. Whether that is much or little money, depends on the user. In principle, the Surface Pro 2 is a replacement for both a tablet and ultrabook as a desktop computer, which is justifiable 1300 euro better again.

The Surface Pro 2 is, all in all, a quick Windows tablet, which will be as laptop or as a tablet. Previously used by its weight That may be fine with the fast Core i5 processor and Windows 8.1 Pro. Compared to the Surface Pro’s battery life and heat greatly improved, while the screen is still bright and rich in contrast. The prices are on the high side and therefore the Pro 2 is not for everyone, but for those looking for a tablet with muscles, is Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is an excellent choice.
