Microsoft: technology use is related to shorter attention spans




Microsoft has released a survey among Canadians and concluded that there is a link between use of new technology, such as smart phones and social media, and attention span. For many users, the attention span is considerably shorter, Microsoft said.

On average attention span has decreased from 12 seconds to 8 seconds in 2000. Now, the company from Redmond. In addition, the researchers established a connection with a “digital lifestyle” which is defined as use of mobile phones, social networks and other media. They are, moreover, especially young people who identify themselves with this lifestyle. The study shows that especially the many users of new technologies whose attention span is short. Therefore likely that many readers of this article does not get beyond the first paragraph.

It was incidentally found a second connection that is more favorable for technology users. So they do have a shorter attention span, but from brain became clear that they have more short peaks in their attention. That indicates that they can multitask better since in a short time can quickly shift their attention several times.
