Ministry begins with preparing new ‘UMTS auction’

The Ministry of Economic Affairs will soon start preparations for redistribution of 3G frequencies. KPN, Vodafone and T-Mobile have these frequencies until the end of 2016. The frequencies were distributed last time in the infamous’ UMTS auction.

Deelnemers aan de umts-veiling: KPN, Libertel (nu Vodafone), DutchTone (nu T-Mobile), Versatel, Ben (nu T-Mobile) en Telfort (nu KPN) That ‘ UMTS auction “gave the state when 2.7 billion and led inter alia to financial problems for KPN. The licenses are distributed at the auction are valid until December 31, 2016, but should the redistribution of frequencies one to two years before that place . The redistribution of these frequencies will probably mean a new auction, though that auction are much smaller than the large frequency auction late last year, since it is only to frequencies in a band, while last year almost all other frequencies were auctioned simultaneously.

The 3G frequencies in the 2.1 GHz band, a band that provides less coverage than the lower frequencies, but can provide more capacity. It is currently the only band that is used in the Netherlands for 3g but soon begin providers with 3g on another frequency. Since then 3g is rolled out on a different frequency band, providers will not have much money left for the 2100MHz band.

The next time the rules for the redistribution be devised, and the frequencies next year or the following year will be distributed. How those rules will look like and whether there last year extra space will be created for new entrants, as with the major auction is unclear.
