MIT learns Cheetah robot to be touched

MIT has demonstrated the Cheetah 3. The institute teaches the four-legged friend to move blindly and to feel confident and not to rely on cameras or other environmental sensors. The robot must be able to be used in case of disasters, among other things.

Robots should not rely too much on their vision, according to MIT’s robot designer Sangbae Kim: “Visibility can be disruptive, inaccurate and sometimes unavailable.” That is why he has made Cheetah 3 more confident about tactile information.

This allows the cheetah to better deal with unexpected obstacles in fast movements. “What if a robot gets on something that it can not see? What does it do?” ” Blind locomotion can help”, according to Kim. In a video, MIT shows how Cheetah 3 can climb stairs, move sideways and take a beating.

MIT’s development team has developed two new algorithms for this purpose: one to detect contact and one for model-predictive control . For example, the first one determines how the robot should respond when it steps on a twig or on a rock. The second regulates the amount of force when putting down a leg. The algorithm makes calculations 20 times per second, in order to be able to cope with unexpected situations.

MIT announces more about Cheetah 3 in October, during the International Conference on Intelligent Robots, in Madrid.
