Noord / Zuidlijn goes live
KPN, Tele2, T-Mobile and Vodafone will activate the mobile network on Saturday in the 7.1 km long metro tunnel of the Amsterdam North / South line. According to the providers, the use of ‘leaky cables’ on the entire route and on all stations, 2g, 3g and 4g coverage.

In a press release, Vodafone and KPN report that the tunnel is equipped with 194 antenna installations and a 11.5km long loop system with coaxial cables to spread the signal. Small directional antennas have been installed at stations and coax cables with small holes in the cable sheath are located in the tunnels, allowing them to spread and receive signals. These so-called ‘leaky cables’ are also used in the mining industry.

The plans for the construction of the mobile network were announced in 2014. The four mobile providers use the same network on the route with the same transmission towers and antennas. The mobile network in the tunnel has been created and paid for by the providers. Vodafone has taken the lead on the design and construction of the infrastructure.

The providers will monitor intensively in the coming period to carry out further optimisations. In recent weeks, the mobile network has already been tested to prevent malfunctions on other networks. From Saturday, when the North / South line opens to the public, the mobile network is available to all travelers.

According to estimates, 120,000 travelers use the network every day, the providers say. Amsterdam alderman of Transport and Traffic, Sharon Dijksma, said yesterday in the TV program Jinek that she expects daily ‘tens of thousands of travelers’ to use the line, ‘perhaps more than eighty thousand’.
