MSI Vortex Review – Innovative concept with old hardware
The Vortex is home to a fast i7 processor, two-nvme SSDs, two graphics cards and up to 64GB of memory in a volume of only 6.5 liters. The system is the price and for 4600 euros you expect also the fastest of the fastest. This expectation is not quite realized that MSI used two GTX 980 GPUs of the previous generation. Moreover, the price difference between DIY and these ready-to-use PC gaming is very big.

Taiwan’s MSI has focused on products for gamers in recent years. And not only manufacturer built gaming laptops and video cards, but was also experimenting with new form factors, such as a laptop and all-in-one external video card, and a thick gaming PC with a volume of only 6.5 liters. The latter, the Vortex was previously at CES 2016 announced and is now starting to get 2450 euros. For that money you get the version with a i7-6700 CPU and two GTX 960 graphics cards. For this review MSI sent us the most expensive version, with i7-6700K, 64GB of memory and two GTX 980 graphics cards. The price: 4600 euros. Our question: what do you get exactly that astronomical sum?
The Vortex is a personal computer that uses a cylindrical housing. The resemblance to a Mac Pro is obviously made quickly, but the concept is also used by Cryorig for Ola, a cylindrical housing that can accommodate a standard PCIe graphics card and an ITX motherboard.
MSI Vortex Back to the vortex, which is 27 centimeters high and has a diameter of 19 centimeters, with which the box which is greater than a Mac Pro. The housing is mostly made of plastic, but is on a solid metal base. Whoever Mac Pro can remember, remember that Apple components into the cylindrical housing fielded around the Thermal Core , or the large heatsink in the middle of the housing. The processor and the two GPUs allow their heat to the heatsink, while a large fan generates an airflow through the cooling fins.
MSI has tackled the other way at the Vortex. The two GPUs and the processor are directed outwards and all have their own heatsink, while upstairs a big fan for cooling in the housing causes. Between the aluminum base and the cylindrical housing fan has room to suck in fresh air, and the heated air at the top exits the housing again. At low load, you will hardly hear the fan at high load you notice that the engine speed rises, but the noise level is still acceptable.
MSI Vortex Because, despite its small size, desktop computer, the MSI Vortex has provided lots of connections. It is striking that many connections are duplicated. The HDMI, minidisplayport-, Ethernet and USB connections c are each provided two. The USB c connector supports thunderbolt 3.0 and also complete four regular USB 3.0 connectors appearance of the rear of the Vortex.
About Vortex will adjust to your taste, the LEDs on the outside of the casing using the supplied software or a smartphone app (Android / iOS) blink, breathe and shine all colors of the rainbow.
Hardware and upgrades
Want to see the Vortex hardware up close, it is also possible because the system is to get rid of some trouble of his outer plastic caps. At the back can be screwed off a part of the housing, after which the two semi-circular shells of the plastic housing can be achieved. The Vortex is equipped with 64GB DDR4 memory, divided into four strips. At present, the largest available 16GB DDR4 modules wide, with which you are already at the maximum of 64GB. The memory can not therefore be extended.
The two-nvme SSDs are 256GB in size and mounted on the same PCB as the right video card, which one is on the front and the other is hidden in the back. If you want to expand the storage capacity, you can replace SSDs, but there is also a regular SATA disk 1TB hiding in the tray next to the heatsink for the processor, which can be naturally replaced. Despite the appearance that suggests the contrary, it thus appears possible to replace components.Viewing:-167
