NASA showed robot “Valkyrie”

Space agency NASA in the contest DARPA Robotics Challenge created your own robot Valkyrie («Valkyrie”), which the agency will officially unveil the press only on December 18 this year. Nevertheless portal IEEE Spectrum managed the first look with one eye on the new robot.

The official name is “Valkyrie» – R5. Height robot is 1.9 meters, and weight – 125 pounds. Development of humanoid robot engaged Space Center Lyndon B. Johnson (JSC), owned by NASA and located in Houston. Helped engineers from JSC robotics from the University of Texas at Austin.

The figure below you can see a video on what looks like “Valkyrie” and get to know some of “her” features. According to the creators, design a robot had to be like this “robot superhero.” Whether it happened in the end, judge for yourself.

The construction of the robot, which will take part in the contest DARPA Robotics Challenge a couple of weeks, it took nine months of hard work everyday.

“On competition” Valkyrie “will compete with 16 other teams and their robots and quite possibly, in the future, in updated form, even become a member of space missions within the first flight to Mars. Until such time as the Red Planet will fly real people “- talks about future plans for the robot Nicholas Redford, head of the development team,” Valkyrie. ”

«NASA is very happy to see how DARPA Robotics Challenge helps accumulate the development of the processes and technologies that we are in fact engaged in agency and are sure to be required for future space exploration. NASA is going to deliver to Mars, and for the successful achievement of this goal will require pre-dispatch to robots. Technology, which, for example, used in “Valkyrie” and other robots that will participate in the contest, directly reflect all those critical initial task of future programs aimed at the possibility of future space exploration. ”
