NASA test plane with fourteen electric motors
NASA is working on a new propulsion technology for aircraft. The organization will equip an experimental aircraft with new wings where fourteen electric motors are attached to. The goal is to allow aircraft to consume less fuel.
Friday plans were announced during a presentation in Washington, the event Aviation 2016. The plane with electrically powered engines has been named X-57, and is nicknamed “Maxwell”, after the famous Scottish physicist James Maxwell. According to NASA chief Charles Bolden is announcing the X-57 is the first step in a process that will take about ten years, and aims to make better airplanes. Specifically, it to reduce fuel consumption, emissions and noise.
The X-57 NASA has opted for a completely new wing design, where a total of fourteen electric powered motors are incorporated. Twelve of these engines are used for takeoff and landing, while two are meant for flying at cruising altitude. NASA thinks distributing electric power can provide multiple engines for higher efficiency and expects to reduce energy costs by 40 percent.
The developed technology must above all provide a solution for smaller aircraft. This would not only be able to fly efficiently with the electrically powered motors, but also can achieve higher speeds. Which fly at higher speeds normally cost considerably more fuel, it would not play a major role in the X-57, according to NASA.
Because it involves visiting a lengthy research into new ways of propulsion, it is unlikely that in the short term aircraft such as the X-57 on the market. It is in line with expectations that positive test results, manufacturers have the ability to handle the technology in their own planes.
NASA is best known for developing space technology and organizing space missions, but the organization also has a rich history in the development of aircraft.
