NASA will get water on the moon

Official representatives of the U.S. space agency NASA reported that the organization is going to launch in the next few years a new space mission Resource Prospector Mission (RPM). As part of this mission will be used rover (rover), endowed with the possibility of production of volatiles from the lunar surface and on the basis of these chemicals – synthesizing water.

The decision to develop the mission was taken after the news that on the surface of our natural satellite of a planet were discovered hydrogen and areas covered with ice. These chemicals can be used to produce water and oxygen. If there are suitable for this technique, such an opportunity will come in handy in the future if mankind wants to establish a colony on the moon. In this case, hydrogen can be used to produce fuel, and oxygen – to create a suitable atmosphere for breathing inside the accommodation modules, installed on the lunar surface.

According to portal Space News, the main tool in the mission will be RPM RESOLVE (Regolith and Environment Science and Oxygen & Lunar Volatile Extraction). The device has been suggested by experts from the Department of Advanced Exploration Systems Division at the Department of NASA Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate.

After landing on the lunar surface, the machine RPM / RESOLVE will be the first example of a technology for the extraction of minerals outside surface of our own planet and the possibility to use them directly in the same place. Some experts from NASA suggest that it is possible to start the mission will take place sometime in 2018.

To date, the U.S. space agency has already spent on the development of this project is about $ 20 million. The total cost of the mission is estimated at about $ 250 million.

“Concept RPM mission beyond its implementation solely on the moon. Moon in this case for us is just an excellent platform for testing new technologies “, – says technical director of space operations NASA Jason Krusan.

If the mission RESOLVE show his success on the lunar surface, the second mission for the extraction and use of found or produced on-site resources will already associated with Mars. In this case, the machine will be installed at the new Mars rover, which NASA plans to launch to the Red Planet sometime in 2020 .
