New data center in Zeeland gets Huawei as its first customer

The construction plans for a new datacenter in Zeeland can continue as Huawei is the first major customer to report. The aim is for the computer center to receive cooling via seawater and energy via solar power and wind turbines.

The construction of the data center has to start in October. The complex is located in the Zeeland Sloe area near the Vlissingen harbor. It is initially a first phase, especially for Huawei, which should be ready in 2019. That is what the director of the initiator, the Amsterdam based company The Green Bay, announces to PZC . After 2019, two more steps will follow to expand the data center.

Ultimately, a complex of 10,000 square meters must be created, with space for four thousand racks and 150,000 to 200,000 servers. The power must come from wind farms off the coast of Zeeland and from future solar parks. For the first part of the data center, 6 megawatts of power are required; after three years the energy requirement is expected to grow to 30 megawatts. The Westerschelde supplies the cooling water.

The computer center has to offer work for 30 to 35 people. The Green Bay hopes that the datacenter next to Huawei will attract more customers so that a second datacenter can be built, referring to the growth of Google’s data center in the Eemshaven in Groningen .
