New found the coldest spot on Earth
A new series of studies based on the most detailed maps ever developed global temperatures showed that the coldest spot on the planet is located on the East Antarctic plateau. The temperature in this area in the winter can reach (just think about it!) -92 Degrees Celsius!

Cards with which this discovery was made, contain a single information obtained through the work of meteorological satellite data for more than last 32 years. One of these satellites is an American spacecraft remote sensing – Landsat 8.

Satellite itself is the result of joint work of the American space agency NASA and USGS USA (USGS), the U.S. government research organization specializing in the geosciences. With a range of all kinds of research and measuring equipment, spacecraft can perform a variety of tasks that it receives.

New data from the satellite were opened to the public a few days ago, December 9, as part of the Autumn meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), held in San Francisco. Presentation of new data held Ted Skabos, lead scientist of the U.S. National Data Center for tracking the snow and ice, located in Boulder, Colorado (USA).

Careful analysis of the accumulated in 32 years of data showed that the most extreme low temperature was recorded in the eastern Antarctic Ridge. After conducting several tests, scientists have identified cases as low as the temperature around the ridge. It was found that the lowest temperature was recorded August 10, 2010, ie at a time when the southern part of the planet was winter.

The previous record for the lowest temperature on the planet has been fixed in the countryside, where the Russian station “Vostok”, incidentally, is also located in the eastern part of Antarctica. In 1983 there was recorded temperature -89.2 degrees Celsius. By the way, the lowest recorded temperature in residential areas was recorded also in Russia. In towns Verkhoyansk and Oymyakon was recorded temperature -69,8 ° C and -71,2 ° C, respectively.

“We had a suspicion that the Arctic Ridge has the lowest temperatures on Earth. There’s even colder than in the “East”, because the terrain is still above sea level. Thanks Landsat 8, we were able to get the final data and explore this area in more detail “- Skambos shared at the conference.

To check the quality of the data, figures from Landsat 8 were confirmed by scanning spectrometer medium resolution (MODIS), mounted on satellites NASA Terra and Aqua, as well as high-resolution radiometer installed on various satellites of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“There is no air circulation for a long time, and the continued evolution of heat into space, and in front of you – the area with the lowest temperature of our planet” – explains Skambos.

“We thought we would find a single place with an extremely low temperature, but it turned out that the whole area in Antarctica is above the rest. It is in this area was recorded a record low temperature of the Earth “- summed scientist.
