New Horizons discovered supposedly flowing ice and fog layers on Pluto

Slow but steady trickle images that the spacecraft New Horizons Pluto was inside. NASA has again Friday published photos that give a picture of the distant dwarf planet in our solar system.

One of the photos of New Horizons shows that the atmosphere of Pluto has two distinct layers of fog, so says NASA Friday after studying the images. The first fog layer is approximately eighty kilometers altitude, while the other thirty kilometers hangs lower.

Models indicate that the fog layers created when ultraviolet light from the sun breaks down methane gas particles. This leads to the formation of complex hydrocarbons such as ethylene and acetylene, which also saw New Horizons at Pluto. The hydrocarbons then whirl and shapes down than ice crystals, which are responsible according to NASA for the fog layer.

“My jaw dropped when I first saw the picture of an alien atmosphere in the Kuiper Belt It reminds us that discoveries bring us more than amazing finds -. They bring us incredible beauty,” says New Horizons investigator Alan Stern.

Fog Layers Pluto

But New Horizons discovered over the fog layers. The spacecraft also sent images of Pluto to Earth that scientists further surprised. In an area as large as the US state of Texas – Sputnik Planum – is a layer of ice that may have shifted and it still does. According to NASA, which resemble ice sheets glaciers.

The ice sheets may shift by the minimum temperature of about 200 degrees Celsius below zero, says the US space agency. In the south of the large heart-shaped ice sheet on Pluto, also known as Region Tombaugh, is to see that new ice cream is sold on the spot where lie ancient ice sheets. NASA saw this before in “active worlds like Earth and Mars.

Possible glacier on Pluto

How spectacular too: these images are far from the last New Horizons has collected for us. It will take until the end of next year until all radio signals stored by New Horizons images arrive. Currently the spacecraft 12.2 million kilometers beyond Pluto and swishes it deeper into the Kuiper Belt. According to NASA, he is in good health.
