Qualcomm: new mobile soc with integrated 5g modem will be available in 2020

In the framework of the Mobile World Congress Qualcomm has announced that in the first half of 2020 the first commercial aircraft with a Snapdragon soc with integrated 5g modem can be expected.

Qualcomm reports that, according to the planning, copies of the new soc will go to manufacturers in the second quarter of this year. This means that the new Snapdragon soc to be announced in the first half of next year is expected in devices. Presumably that soc will appear in high-end devices, such as the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S10.

The manufacturer does not yet give much details about the new product, although Qualcomm says that the soc elaborates on the experiences of the existing 5g modems, the X50 and the recently presented X55 . Qualcomm also states that the new soc ‘has’ in the second generation of its own mmWave-5g antenna module. The first version of it was unveiled in the summer of last year .

The current high-end Snapdragon 855 from Qualcomm is a 7nm chip that already supports 5g, but that still requires a separate, internal X50 modem, which is not integrated as standard. By integrating a modem for 5g into what might become the successor of the Snapdragon 855, it will be easier to use 5g networks. In addition, a separate 5 g solution will require less energy from the battery.
