New SSD controller Sage can 5TB flash control

The Chinese firm Sage Microelectronics has developed with the SG68x an SSD controller chip that can drive to flash memory on an SSD up to 5TB. Most of the SSD controllers Up to now, still limited to the addressing of up to 1TB of flash memory.

Sage states that it is possible with his SG68x controller, which would have a multi-core structure, to directly send flash chips by integrating various aanstuuronderdelen in the chip. This is a standard 2.5 “SSD pcb more space for placing MMC, emmc- or SD flash chips, allowing the storage capacity can be increased.

The Sage ten Number S68X-controller sends data on channels that, in turn, can drive four flash chips. Up to 5 TB can be used in applying of 128GB-flash chips thereby controlled. Sage uses the creation of a RAID 0 array, which has the disadvantage that data loss will occur if one of the channels fails.

Sage says that its controller chip already used for 2.5TB-ssd, is but the storage capacity can be doubled by the manufacturer to the maximum of 5TB. However, the throughput that SG68x controller can achieve are limited by a SATA 300 interface is used; The manufacturer calls sequential read and write speeds of 260 and 225MB / s respectively. Sage provides no specifications about the number of IOPS. The controller is relatively inexpensive: it would ssd manufacturers 5 dollars, about 4 euros, costs.
