Nobel Prize in Medicine scientists receive, opened «GPS» in the human brain




At the time when you just move in space, certain cells in your brain are certain map, so you can freely navigate around. This is very similar to how the conventional GPS-receivers. We know this thanks to three scientists who for this discovery this year will receive the Nobel Prize in medicine.

American scientist John O’Keefe began his study of more than 40 years ago, and later worked with Norwegian researchers spouses May-Britt and Edvard Moser. O’Keefe first discovered the so-called cell positioning in the hippocampus of their laboratory rats during the research. He concluded that these cells are a component of the “navigation” of animals. Even while opening O’Keefe was considered revolutionary, but this study did not end there, according to the resource Gizmodo.

In 2005, the couple continued to work Moser O’Keefe and found one more cells in the brain of rats that were specific grid coordinates for positioning on the ground. This grid is analogous to longitude and latitude, which are used in cartography. These discoveries have given scientists a completely new understanding of the internal positioning system in the brain.

In addition, recent studies have shown that similar «GPS»-cells are also characteristic of the human brain. According to scientists, in-depth research in this area will enable them to further explore Alzheimer’s disease and help people suffering from this disease.

Three scientists will gather on December 10 in Stockholm to receive his award , and will share the prize money of $ 1.1 million.
