Nokia brings ESE-virtual reality camera on the market for 55,000 euros
Nokia announces that the ESE, a professional camera to record Fri videos, on sale for 55,000 euros. The spherical device has eight cameras that capture each in 2k resolution. The images are assembled to 8k videos.
Nokia ESE Nokia announced the VR camera in July last year and brings now the device on the market in Europe. The Finnish company aims to professional companies who want to create virtual reality videos. The spherical camera has eight cameras with the same number of lenses, which have an angle of view of 195 degrees. The sensors included in 2k2k format, presumably 2048×2048 pixels. The images are combined to form ‘8k x 4k’ videos, probably with dimensions of 8192×4096 pixels.
The device weighs 4.2kg and can be used wirelessly. Thus, the ESE can for example be hung under a drone to create images from the air. The camera writes images away in a raw format to an SSD module with storage capacity of 500GB. That is good for 45 minutes of filming. The frame rate is 30fps. To view the results requires a VR headset, such a Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR or VR PlayStation.
Simultaneously with the market launch Nokia announced collaboration with Deluxe and The Foundry on. The former is a company that provides post-production video and will process images from the ESE add to its services. The Foundry’s NUKE maker include the software and that package will soon handle 3D images taken with the Nokia ESE.
