‘NPO started with 1080p test via dvb-t2’

The NPO has started a test in the province of Utrecht with the broadcasting of images at 1080p instead of 1080i. It would currently involve three channels. The NPO uses dvb-t2. KPN has started the transition to this technique.

There are signals from people from the region that the HD versions of NPO 1, NPO 2 and NPO 3 can be watched over the air in 1080p by the people with the right equipment, reports TotaalTV . In order to be able to display the signal, a dvb-t2 hevc tuner is required, according to the site. In addition, people must have an outdoor antenna. Normally, 1080i is used, because this requires less bandwidth due to the use of interlacing . The NPO indicated a few years ago that it wanted to make the switch to DVB-T2.

KPN recently announced that it had started the transition to DVB-T2 for Digitenne, a requirement that was imposed when the license was granted in 2016. This month the provider started the preparations, which means, among other things, that the channel frequency changes. The first region to be launched this year is North East of the Netherlands.

The rest of the country will follow next year and the transition must be completed by 2020. During the transition, the transition from sd to hd quality also takes place. The transition to DVB-T2 is also necessary because from 2020 the 700MHz band, currently used for TV over the air, will be used for 4g or 5g.
