NS has twelve smartwatch conductors used to improve punctuality

The Dutch Railways provides a dozen guardians of a smartwatch in the hope of making the trains run more on time. For this purpose, an app developed by the NS is used that serves as a reminder for the departure process of a train.

An NS-conductor explains that the smartwatch and the app actually serve as a reminder. “The smartwatch gives a vibration signal shortly before departure, so that you start your departure process on time, and the beauty is: it really counts back, so that we can leave exactly on the second.” This means that the conductor has exactly the same departure time as the driver according to the NS.

The twelve conductors started the test this week and use the smartwatch for four weeks. Later this year the group will be expanded considerably and a hundred conductors will use the smartwatch and accompanying app. At that moment the effect of the smartwatch for the entire country is measured and the question is asked whether it has been useful for improving punctuality.

A NS spokesman said that it is testing the app, which shows a counter that counts down to the exact moment of departure. All conductors have a smartphone and in principle they could also be used instead of the smartwatch, but because a conductor is busy with multiple actions during the departure process of a train and the hands are also used, the smartphone is not easy during that process. be used and a vibrating signal is much more convenient via the smartwatch.

Eventually all 3000 conductors will eventually be equipped with the smartwatch, but that is still uncertain and depends on the results of the test. The precise type of smartwatch is still unclear. The Emerce website reports on the basis of a NS spokesperson that it is an ‘Android smartwatch
