Number of iDEAL transactions Black Friday again

almost half higher than last year
Last Friday, Black Friday, almost half of the iDEAL payments were made compared to last year. For comparison, the amount of PIN transactions increased by a fifth. In total, consumers spent nearly 750 million euros, of which around 275 million euros via iDeal.

The 2017 increase in 2018 is 47 percent. From 2016 on 2017 , that was an increase of 65 percent. Although a weaker increase, but the online payment system is still experiencing very strong growth, it is only increasing in share compared to in-store payments. The figures are provided by Berend Jan Beugel from the Dutch Payments Association Tweakers.

iDeal logo Looking at total figures, debit cards are still much more popular: 19 million debit card transactions accounted for 474.9 million euros and 3.5 million iDEAL transactions accounted for around 275 million euros.

To give an idea of how big Black Friday has become: for comparison, on a normal Friday around this time of the year it is customary that there are about one and a half million iDEAL transactions taking place, with a turnover of 120 million euros. Black Friday is therefore good for a large doubling of the number of iDEAL transactions and nearly six times as much turnover.

Beugel does note that iDEAL is also used for payment requests and items such as paying certain invoices, not all transactions and not all sales in the context of purchases for the holidays. Nevertheless, the same applies to the vast majority of transactions and sales.

A few days ago, iDEAL also registered its 2 billionth payment ever . For this year, Currence, responsible for the payment platform, expects Dutch people to make more mobile iDEAL payments than iDEAL payments via the PC for the first time.
